General
Situated only half a mile from the centre of the historic town of Brighton,
the Marina has excellent communications by road, rail, and air.
Two giant breakwaters made up of 100 massive caissons, each equivalent in height
to a four-storey house, protect the Marina itself. The area thus enclosed totals
over 126 acres and besides the modern harbour with berthing for up to 1300 boats,
there is a marina village hosting a wide range of shoreside facilities.
Entrance
The entrance lies between the East and West Breakwater arms and is dredged to
2.0m below C.D. Storms occasionally drive sand in to form a bank just South
of the end of the Eastern Breakwater and shoaling may occur in the entrance
channel between dredges. If you are in doubt as to the up-to-date position,
contact the Marina Reception for latest surveyed depths. Red and green markers
buoy the natural channel. When approaching from the west, please give the end
of the Western Breakwater a wide berth to avoid exiting traffic.
In heavy weather the most used approach is from the south, thus avoiding much
of the backlash from the breakwaters. The entrance channel is buoyed to the
inner entrance, which is marked by fixed red and green vertical lights.
Communications
A 24 hour VHF radio watch (call sign 'Brighton Marina') is maintained on Channels
80 and 16. Please call on Channel 80 if possible.
By Night
At night, the breakwater lights can be lost in the general background lighting,
although a high intensity lamp fitted to the Sector Light (Gp Fl W&R4 every
20 secs.) with a range of 10 n.m. has greatly improved this.
Bad Visibility
When visibility in the Marina entrance is less than 1000 metres the fog horn
(two every 30 sec.) sited on the southern end of the West Breakwater is activated.
Reception
During the summer months a Marina Patrol vessel will be stationed at the entrance
to the Marina throughout the day. The crew will advise and assist with all berthing
requirements. In the absence of the patrol boat, on passing the Inner Entrance
and entering the Marina, the Reception Pontoon (Pontoon 10) is located to port.
Unless previously allocated a berth, visitors should moor there on arrival and
report to the Marina Reception, which is clearly marked on the end of the west
Jetty, on the 1st floor.
